“I started working at the previous business, Gansbaai Matte & Blindings, in July 2015 shortly after my return to South Africa from the UK,” says Burgert van der Westhuizen, sole owner of Blinds & Flooring Studio in Gansbaai. “I incorporated my own company, Blinds & Flooring Studio, in March 2016 as I wanted to go beyond just carpets and blinds.” In addition to the excellent quality service that customers can expect, Blinds & Flooring Studio is also offering a special 5% discount on orders received during September 2021.
Burgert serves most of the Overstrand but focuses on the Greater Gansbaai area, Hermanus, Kleinmond and Stanford. He says the biggest reason for the excellent service he provides is his extensive product knowledge, confidence in his products and suppliers, and years of experience. However, most important is his excellent and competent staff members who work for him as a formidable team. “They are a strong and trustworthy team and I have full confidence in them,” he said.
The team includes Nizaam Amien (Manager), Erna Seas (Administration) and Louis Seas (Repairs and Maintenance), as well as four highly qualified fitters for installations. “Part of my winning recipe is also to ensure the best quality, excellent service delivery and good aftercare service to my customers.” Products provided include flooring (vinyl and laminate), blinds, awnings, carpets and carpet supplies and much more. Blinds & Flooring Studio is also the only business in town that services existing blinds. The layout of the store is of such a nature that customers feel at ease when they walk in for enquiries on products and services.
As an example, Burgert refers to a double-storey house in Hermanus where he did vinyl flooring for the owner. Many years later the house was sold. Shortly afterwards, the house was flooded due to a faucet being left open. “The water in the lower part of the house was about a meter deep,” he said. “After everything was dry, there was no visible sign of any damage to the floors, which is testament to the quality products we use, coupled with a quality installation.”
Burgert and his wife, Anine, lived in England for more than 13 years. In England, he worked as an industrial plumber, while Anine was (and continues to be) an advisor on UK immigration and nationality matters. The couple has two children, Mika (9) and Erin (5).
The family lives in Hermanus, where Burgert operated two more stores before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic forced him to close the Hermanus stores to reduce costs. “The first few months of lockdown were difficult, but after that things went much better with the business,” says Burgert. “I do not stare blindly at problems but look up and deal with the problems in a positive way for them to be resolved.” He is a man with great gratitude for the success of the business. Thankfully it was not necessary to close the Gansbaai store as well. “I stay positive, and this is also how I positively influence my staff members,” he says. Erna adds: “Burgert contributes to a wonderful and relaxed atmosphere, with lots of laughter and humour in the shop!”
