Suspected poachers arrested after tip-off

On 20 April 2022, Overstrand Municipality’s K9 and Task Team officers in partnership with CapeNature, Marine and Coastal unit as well as members from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) arrested five divers in Buffeljagsbaai near Gansbaai after receiving information about suspected poaching activities in that area.

The suspected poachers, with their diving equipment worth R115 000 and two rubber ducks worth R340 000 were confiscated. 24 unshucked and one shucked abalone worth R4 000 were found on them.
The suspects, abalone and diving equipment were taken to Bredasdorp SAPS for processing and the boats were handed in at Gansbaai Police.
